Sometimes you get an idea that just needs to go a certain way.
A long while back I saw an ad for a shirt that read “Boymom” — intended to be worn by a woman who is the mother of male children, but can’t help but sound like some kind of TG premise. I had a chuckle about it but couldn’t help but wonder if there was something I could do with that premise.
The thing is, I’ve actually already written the story of a boy who becomes a mom — my novel Kristi’s Mom covers that ground pretty thoroughly so I wasn’t sure I had any more to say about the topic.
But a good idea won’t just leave you alone. The truth is, in my wildest dreams, I’m not a novelist, but a writer of TV and movies. What would be the harm in, just as an exercise, trying to write a TV pilot for an ongoing series about, well… exactly.
BOYMOM is kind of a take on the 90’s series Party of Five. The Martin kids are left on their own after their father dies of cancer and their mom is left in a coma due to a shocking car accident. Thanks to an enigmatic mad scientist with a shape-changing device, 17-year-old Kevin is able to take on his mother’s appearance and live her life: keeping his siblings together and being able to provide for them, albeit not without a price.
I wrote it for kicks. The formatting may not be perfect, but I really enjoyed writing it and would love to share it with you.
